Web Resources Useful for Dictionary Research
During 1997/98, I was one of the students working on a new English dictionary at the University of Toronto. The following are a few of the World-Wide Web links that are useful in this kind of work. This list of bookmarks used to be much longer, but clearing out dead links after more than 10 years left a short list.
- Dictionaries & Thesauri on the Web
- Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd edition (only accessible to UofT users)
- Merriam-Webster Dictionary & Thesaurus
- Merriam-Webster's Student's Electronic Dictionary
- Research-It! - Your one-stop reference desk (several different dictionaries, etc.)
- Library of Congress Thesauri Home Page
- Hierarchical databases:
- WordNet Search (a different search interface for WordNet)
- A couple of interesting slang pages:
- Fowler, H. W. 1908. The King's English. (the classic reference on English grammar)
- A newspaper column on words:
- New Words
- Keith Lynch's timeline of net related terms and concepts (history of first appearances of new terms on the Internet)
- Military Sealift Command (U.S. military usage example)
- Handy sources for citations:
- Bible Gateway - Search the Bible in Nine Languages and Multiple Bible Versions
- The Globe and Mail: Canada's National Web Site
- A few other miscellaneous linguistic links:
